Consumer electronics major Sharp is planning a foray in the solar heating system market in the country. Other offerings such as low-end refrigerators, washing machines are also on the cards.

T Yamazaki, managing director, Sharp India, told mediapersons on Thursday that the company is currently studying the Indian market for its solar energy systems and may introduce solar panels by September 2006. A world leader in solar technology, Sharp currently exports solar panels to southeast Asia, Europe and other markets.

The company is moving towards having a presence in the entire range of home appliances in the country. Sharp at present sells only high-end refrigerators in the country.

Earlier, Yamazaki inaugurated Sharp's first exclusive showroom Sharp Galaxy in Pune. These showrooms will be selling Sharp products exclusively. "We plan to set up 50 such Sharp Galaxy outlets in the country by end-2007," Yamazaki said.

These Galaxy outlets will be opened next in Mumbai, Bangalore and Ambala. Another outlet in Pune will also be opened soon, he added.

Sharp India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp Corporation, Japan. It was started as a joint venture - Kalyani Sharp - with Kalyanis of Bharat Forge. Sharp Corporation eventually bought out the Kalyanis' stake to become a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese giant. The company has a manufacturing facility at Sanaswadi, about 30 km from Pune.
