In the initial tranche of funding, ICICI Bank would provide Rs 4 crore (approximately $8,65,000) to WHI's Indian subsidiary " WaterHealth India Private Limited " as a commercial loan facility.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Tralance Addy, president and CEO of WHI, said the fund would be utilised for providing high-quality potable water to low-income rural communities in India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh.
WHI has developed UV Waterworks, a non-submerged ultraviolet disinfection system that inactivates bacteria, viruses and other microbial pathogens, which cause acute water-borne diseases.
The company intends to provide the systems to rural communities at user fees so that even households, which earn just Rs 90 per day can afford.
The Naandi Foundation, a social initiative of Dr Reddy's Laboratories, is working closely with WHI to spread awareness about the importance of safe drinking water.
"We are planning to cover 100 panchayats and provide turnkey water treatment plants that would cater to the safe drinking water needs of around 2.5 lakh people in the current financial year," said Manoj Kumar, chief executive of Naandi Foundation.
