Ten workers at a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Ranipet in Tamil Nadu have died after a treatment tank burst Saturday morning.

"The accident took place at a common effluent treatment plant here," said a police official. The workers, who were sleeping near the effluent tank, drowned when the tank burst, they said.

Nine out of ten workers that died were from West Bengal, while one was from the Vellore district.

The CETP was offering services to more than 80 tanneries in the area. Two people, who were rescued, are undergoing treatment, they said.
