An Air India technician died after being sucked into an engine of an Airbus A319 at the Mumbai airport on Wednesday night. Air India said the mishap took place when the aircraft was being pushed back from the parking bay. The co-pilot of the Mumbai-Hyderabad flight mistook a signal and started the engine. The victim, Ravi Subramanian, got sucked into it at the Chhatrapati Shivaji domestic airport around 8:40 pm.

Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation are probing the incident.

In a statement, Air India Chairperson Ashwani Lohani said: "We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident at Mumbai airport this evening when an Air India technician died in a mishap during the pushback of flight AI 619. The incident is being investigated."
