An army soldier was killed in the Keran sector of the Line of Control in north Kashmir's Kupwara district where another infiltration bid was foiled Thursday night.
A defence spokesman told IANS here alert army troops spotted a group of heavily armed infiltrators trying to sneak into the Indian side in Kachal area of the Keran sector Thursday night.
"The troops challenged the infiltrators, whereupon they started firing, triggering a shootout. One of our boys was injured and later died. However, the infiltration bid was foiled," the spokesman said.
The Kachal area is 15 km away from Shalabato where the army carried out a 14-day long operation against a group of about 30 infiltrators.
