 "TN cops spot bookies' links with VIPs")
The CB-CID of the Tamil Nadu police today said bookies, who were arrested in Chennai for alleged spot-fixing in matches during the IPL Season 6, are found to have VIP clients and one such is an important real estate developer.
The Police also said it has frozen bank accounts of bookies. It may be noted, six people were arrested in Chennai in connection with the fixing on May 16th.
Sources in the CB-CID said that investigation reveals that many of the accused have obtained SIM cards by impersonation with false and fictitious identity proofs to hide their original identity while committing the offence of cheating with criminal conspiracy.
As such the sections of IPC 419 cheating by personation, 465 forgery, 468 forgery for cheating, 471 using a forged document as genuine are added to the already slapped charged.
So far CB-CID have arrested seven accused and searched 10 premises. Cash Rs 18 lakh, bank cheques to the tune of Rs 50 lakh, Laptops, computers, cell phones have been seized apart from other vital and incriminating documents. Bank accounts of the bookies have been frozen.
“We are in the process of analysing the call details as well as the information available in the electronic devices of the accused persons. Bookies are found to have VIP clients and one such is an important real estate developer. Enquiry shows he is having financial dealing with many bookies. Investigation is going on all the leads and inputs that are available. Special police parties are formed to nab notorious bookie Kitty @ Uttam,” according to CB-CID statement.
It may be noted on May 16th, a day after three players were arrested on spot-fixing in the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), the CB-CID arrested six people in Chennai in connection with spot-fixing.
Venkatraman, DSP of CB-CID said that the case is progressing on the right lines – all those who are involved in this case of criminal cheating and luring gullible public will be brought to book.
Out of the seven accused who have been arrested so far four accused including Harish Bajaj, S Virudhachalam, Lucky @ Narpath Jain, Pappu @ Praveen Kumar have been taken into police custody for interrogation. The others will also be brought to police custody in due course.
