UK records another 2,381 coronavirus cases, 15 deaths

Another 2,381 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 4,416,623, according to official figures released on Friday.
 
The country also reported another 15 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 127,517. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, Xinhua reported.
 
More than 34.2 million people have been given the first jab of a coronavirus vaccine, according to the latest official figures. (IANS)

AstraZeneca delays filing for US authorisation of Covid shot

AstraZeneca said Friday that it intends to seek US authorisation for its Covid-19 vaccine in the coming weeks," acknowledging a delay in the much-anticipated filing that had been expected by mid-April.
 
The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker revealed the new timetable as it released first-quarter financial results, which showed that the company delivered 68 million doses of the vaccine to the UK, European Union and other countries in the first three months of the year.
 
The company said it was continuing to work on its application to the US Food and Drug Administration, noting the substantial size of the file" that will include data from US trials as well all other studies completed so far and real-world data collected from use of the vaccine in other countries. Assam logs record 26 Covid deaths in one day, 3,197 new cases

Assam recorded 26 Covid-19 deaths on Friday, the highest in a single day so far, taking the toll to 1,281, while 3,197 new cases pushed the tally to 2,53,123, a bulletin issued by the state National Health Mission (NHM) here said.
 
Of the 26 deaths, eight were reported from Kamrup Metro, four from Kamrup Rural, two each from Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Nagaon and Hojai, and one each from Cachar, Darrang, Golaghat, Nalbari and Udalguri, the bulletin said.
 
The fatality rate in the state stands at 0.52 per cent, and the positivity rate at 4.53 per cent. (PTI)

US to restrict travel from India starting May 4

The US will restrict travel from India starting on May 4, the White House said Friday, citing a devastating rise in Covid-19 cases in the country and the emergence of potentially dangerous variants of the coronavirus.
 
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden's administration made the determination on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
 
The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high Covid-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India, she said. Read here

Lockdown extended in Rajasthan till May 17

The Rajasthan government on Friday extended the lockdown till May 17 due to the soaring coronavirus infections.
 
The Home Department principal secretary issued the order, calling it 'Pandemic Red Alert- Public Discipline Fortnight'.
 
The restrictions, which were imposed from April 19 to to May 3, were extended for 15 days (PTI)

Coronavirus Latest: Maharashtra's Covid cases zoom again

After a day's lull, Covid-19 fatalities against shot up in Maharashtra with the state's toll crossing the 68,000 mark, and no respite in Mumbai deaths, health officials said here on Friday.
 
Against 771 deaths on Thursday, the state now recorded 828 fatalities, taking up the toll to 68,813.
 
The number of new infections remained above the 60,000 mark, but went down from 66,159 on Thursday to 62,919 on Friday, taking up the state tally to 46,02,472. (IANS)

Delhi sees 375 Covid deaths, over 27,000 cases in a day

Delhi on Friday recorded 375 deaths due to the coronavirus and 27,047 fresh cases with a positivity rate of 32.69 per cent, according to the latest bulletin issued by the city health department.
 
This is the ninth day on the trot that Delhi has recorded over 300 coronavirus-related deaths.
 
It had reported 395 deaths, the highest since the pandemic began a year ago, on Thursday; 368 deaths on Wednesday; 381 on Tuesday; 380 on Monday; 350 on Sunday; 357 deaths on Saturday, and 348 on Friday, according to government data. (PTI)
