Delhi govt takes 8 services of transport department online

People of Delhi can now apply online for eight services of the transport department including driving licence, issue of duplicate registration certificate, and transfer of vehicle ownership.

Apart from these, the services which have been made online include the payment of road tax and the fitness fees, allotment of fancy registration numbers, change of address in the registration certificate (RC) of a vehicle and deletion in vehicle registration.

Inaugurating the transport department's online services at the Delhi Secretariat here, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the AAP government will soon introduce 'e-Authority' so that people do not have to visit the regional transport offices (RTO), a move intended to "eradicate corruption" from there.

He said, however, as per the Motor Vehicles Rules, an applicant will have to visit the transport offices to get a hard copy of the document once all the necessary requirements such as filing of application and payment of fees are done.

The Delhi Chief Minister said that his government will take up the matter with the Centre, so that there is no human interface at the department's offices.

"In the last two years, the AAP government had taken several steps to provide better services to the people of Delhi. As eight services of transport department have come on online platform, now Delhiites won't have to make rounds of the RTO offices. In future, all department services will be made online," Kejriwal said addressing a gathering.

As per the rough estimate, around 20 lakh people visit RTO offices every year.

To avail of the online services, applicants will have to visit the website of the transport department and choose the service as per their requirements.

Over one crore vehicles are registered in the national capital and around seven lakh others are registered every year.

"Earlier, transport department was understood to be a den of corruption. Through online services, corruption will be eliminated. This is a very big step. I want to thank the transport department officials for the initiative," he said.

Transport minister Satyendar Jain said that as of now half of the services of the transport department has been made online, but in the coming days, all services will come under the same platform.
