Earthquake of 6.4 magnitude shakes Bali

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has ripped through the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

The shock came shortly after 10 am AEST, or 7am local Bali time. It is believed to have been centred off the coast of the Indonesian archipelago, with early data placing it about 26 km south of Denpasar, reports news.com.au.

Many tourists reported feeling a small shaking followed by a larger tremor.

The violent quake was reportedly felt by up to three million inhabitants on and around the island.

Indonesia is part of the 'Pacific Ring of Fire' and it regularly experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity.
