The debate on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail and amendments to the FEMA will shift to the Rajya Sabha from today.
On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha defeated two resolutions that sought to block foreign investment in multi-brand stores. Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party staged a walkout even before the motions were put to vote giving the UPA government a clear victory.
Both SP and BSP had opposed the FDI move but by walking out with some 21 members of Parliament, they ensured smooth sailing for the government.
The FDI motion was defeated by 35 votes in initial counting.
In her closing remarks, Sushma Swaraj, leader of the Opposition, said the House was against FDI since 14 parties representing 242 MPs, including those from the BSP and SP, spoke against FDI.
Voting in Rajya Sabha is expected on Friday.
