Maharashtra reports 43,697 new Covid cases, including 214 Omicron infections

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 43,697 cases, 10 per cent more than the previous day, including 214 new Omicron infections, and also saw 49 fatalities linked to the infection, the health department said.

 

A total of 46,591 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the state's overall recovery count to 69,15,407.

 

The COVID-19 recovery rate of Maharashtra stands at 94.4 per cent, it said. Currently, there are 23,93,704 people in home quarantine and 3,200 people in institutional quarantine. On Tuesday, the state had reported 39,207 coronavirus cases and 53 fatalities. However, not a single case of the highly contagious Omicron variant was recorded that day.

Odisha logs 11,607 new COVID-19 cases, 6 fatalities, 145 fresh Omicron cases

Odisha on Wednesday recorded 11,607 new COVID-19 cases, 521 more than the previous day, and 145 more Omicron cases taking the tally of the new variant to 347, a health department bulletin said.

 

The caseload is now 11,67,094, it said.

 

The new Omicron cases were confirmed after genome sequencing by the Institute of Life Science (ILS), Bhubaneswar out of a total 249 samples collected between January 9 to January 16, 2022, a health department official said.

 

Odisha government Wednesday started trial run of OmiSure test kits for early detection of Omicron virus within four hours. The tests in the first phase will be conducted in places reporting high test positive rates (TPR), the official said.

Air pollution is rapidly becoming a matter of concern in the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat as well despite their geographical advantages and favourable meteorology, according to a new analysis of regional air pollution levels by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

 

"The number of bad-air days in Mumbai have doubled between 2019 and 2021, while good days are down by 20 per cent. This underscores the urgency of scaling up action across all sectors to prevent further worsening and to arrest the trend in this region," said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director, research and advocacy, CSE.

Mumbai reports 6,032 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

Mumbai reported 6,032 new cases of COVID-19 during the last 24 hours, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday.

 

Of these patients, 5,067 (84 per cent) are asymptomatic. A total of 60,291 samples were tested during the last 24 hours.

 

With this, the total count of cases of the disease in Mumbai has gone up to 10,17,999.

 

During the last 24 hours, 18,241 patients recovered from the infection, taking the total recoveries in Mumbai to 9,66,985.
