Mysore city records lowest voter response

Mysore district, including Mysore City, has recorded a voter turnout of 59.69 per cent in the urban local body elections held yesterday.

The percentage of voting to the 65-member Mysore City Corporation (MCC) in Mysore is 56.13 per cent, the lowest in the district.

Of the seven other local bodies in the district, Periyapatna has recorded the highest turnout of 83.75 per cent for its 15-member town panchayat. It is followed by Bannur with 81.09 per cent for its 23-member municipal council.

The 13-member H D Kote town panchayat stands next with 79.40, followed by 11-member town panchayat of T Narasipur, showing a turnout of 79.05, Hunsur town municipality having 27 members with 76.81 per cent and 27-member Nanjangud town municipality seeing 72.58 per cent. K R Nagar which has 23 members in its municipal council stood last with 67.41 per cent turnout of the seven taluks in the district.

The total number of voters in the district is 762,671, of whom men number 382,098 and women 380,573. Of them, 4,55,237 voted and they include 230,621 men and 224,616 women.

Of the 620,694 voters in MCC, 348,373 people exercised their franchise. Voters showed the least interest in voting in Ward 14 where nine candidates contested.

Only 47.31 voters have exercised their franchise, 100-odd more men than women.

The heaviest turnout of voters is in Ward No. 64 where eight candidates contested. This ward has recorded 66.35 per cent. This is followed by Ward 49 with 66.03 where 11 candidates are in fray.

The counting of votes of MCC will be conducted on March 11 at The JSS Pharmacy College, Bannimantap, Maharani's Arts College, JLB Road and JSS College, Nanjangud Road. Prohibitory orders were under Section 144 has been imposed around a radius of 200 metres on that day from 6 am to 12 midnight, says Police Commissioner K L Sudheer.
