Prices of petrol were cut for the seventh consecutive day in Delhi but were hiked for other major cities on Wednesday, while diesel prices remained unchanged on lower global crude oil prices.

According to the Indian Oil data, petrol prices are down by 9 paise in Delhi but were hiked by 8 paise in Mumbai and 9 paise in Chennai and Kolkata.

Petrol is currently being retailed at Rs 81.25 in Delhi, Rs 86.81 in Mumbai, Rs 84.53 in Chennai and Rs 83.19 in Kolkata.

Overall, the petrol price has come down by Rs 1.58 in Delhi in the last seven days.

Diesel prices remained unchanged today at Rs 74.85 per litre in Delhi. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, a litre of diesel costs Rs 78.46, Rs 79.15 and Rs 76.70, respectively.

On Monday, commuters in Delhi had to face a lot of hardships following multiple strikes by fuel pumps, auto-rickshaw and taxi unions and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) contractual employees.

A total of 400 petrol pumps went on strike against Delhi government's refusal to reduce VAT on fuels.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of "threatening" petrol pump owners with Income Tax raids if they did not go on strike.

He also claimed that the prices of petrol and diesel rose because of "arbitrary taxes" levied by the Modi government at the Centre which should be reduced to provide relief to the people.

On October 4, in a bid to ease the crunch caused by soaring fuel prices, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a reduction of Rs 2.50 per litre on both petrol and diesel prices after curbing excise duty on the commodity by Rs 1.50 per litre.
