 "South Odisha post offices get CBS facility")
Three head post offices (HPOs) Including the Berhampur office under Berhampur postal region in Odisha postal circle on Monday rolled out the postal core banking solution (CBS) facilities.
The other two HPOs in the region, which switched over to the CBS platform, are Jeypore and Rayagada.
"With this, we have introduced CBS facilities in five HPOs in the Berhampur postal region", said postmaster general (PMG) of Berhampur postal region, Kalpana. She inaugurated the CBS facility at the head post office here.
As many as 11 post offices in the state, including these five HPOs in Berhampur region, have been connected to the postal core banking network, sources said. The GPO Bhubaneswar, Raj Bhawan post office, Rourkela, Dhenkanal, Athagarh and Chandwin Chowk, Cuttack post offices in the state have the CBS facilities.
The move is a part of the postal department's initiative to make the department technology-oriented and provide services to the customers as in a bank.
The savings bank account holders of these post offices can now do transactions in any of the post offices in the country having CBS facilities without any restriction. "The facility is at par with banking and is one of the most advanced", the PMG said.
"All the ten HPO and 380 sub-post offices in Berhampur regions will be switched over to the CBS platform in a phased manner. The work is going on and it expected to be completed before the end of 2015", she said.
As many as 93,437 accounts with a total balance of Rs 244 crore at the head post office in Berhampur were migrated to the CBS compliant operation. Similarly, in Rayagada, 21,495 accounts with total deposits of around Rs 39 crore have been tagged to the core-banking facilities, sources said.
Like banks, the postal department would also install the ATM machines in select major post offices in the state. In the first phase, ATMs would be installed in head post offices, she said.
The country's first post office savings bank ATM was opened at the head post office at T Nagar, Chennai last February.
