The state government today decided to release an additional five lakh tonnes of rice for taking up employment generation works in villages during the next one month.

Briefing the newsmen on the drought relief works being taken up by the government, information minister S Chandramohan Reddy said the government had already distributed five lakh tonnes in the first phase and spent Rs 547.40 crore on for drought relief works.

He said 1,041 mandals of a total of 1,127 were declared drought-hit and the centre had been urged to extend drought assistance to the tune of Rs 2,373.44 crore and 25 lakh tonnes of rice to provide succour to the people reeling under the worst ever drought in the state.

The centre accordingly released 15 lakh tonnes of rice under the Swarnajayanti Grameen Rojgar Yojna (SGRY), Reddy said. The cabinet instructed the district collectors to constantly monitor the situation and provide employment generation works for the benefit of rural agricultural labourers, he added.
