The Canadian government would soon set up a trade office in Hyderabad to promote two-way trade between Canada and Andhra Pradesh.

David Malone, Canadian high commissioner, said most of the Canadian companies were not aware of the trade and investment opportunities available in India and more so in the progressive state of Andhra Pradesh.

A vast potential exists for increasing cooperation with India in areas of mining, bio-technology, higher education and agriculture research.

"The trade between the countries is not commensurate with the potential due to vast distance and also because most of the merchandise trade takes place through third party exports via Mauritius. However, trade in services is reasonably good with the presence of Indian companies in Canada such as TCS in software, ICICI Bank in the financial sector and Birlas in retail," he said while addressing members of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fapcci) on bilateral trade and investment opportunities.
