Opposition Congress today demanded the immediate dissolution of Karnataka assembly. The chief minister B S Yeddyurappa had lost the moral right to continue in office in the wake of corruption charges, they claimed.
“This government has lost the trust of the people. The government is facing unprecedented level of corruption charges. All the ministers of the Yeddyurappa government are involved in scams,” leader of the opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah said.
Talking to reporters, here, he said if the BJP high command failed to secure Yeddyurappa’s resignation, Congress would launch a statewide agitation against the government, he warned.
Siddaramaiah rejected claims by Yeddyurappa that the state enjoyed comfortable financial position under his rule. “In such a case, why then the government has about Rs 8,000 crore worth of pending bills,” he questioned.
Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa visited Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh to attend the 85th birthday celebrations of Sri Satya Sai Baba and seek his blessings before landing in Delhi.
Earlier, this morning Yeddyurappa had rushed a team of his loyalists including Acharya and Home Minister R Ashok to Delhi to persuade the BJP top brass against change in leadership.
The chief minister is under pressure from the party high command to step down in the wake of alleged land scams.
The religious heads of many mutts in the state have entered the scene and called for continuation of Yeddyurappa as the chief minister.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s core group had authorized president Nitin Gadkari to take a decision on Karnataka.
Vishwesha Teertha Swami of Pejawara Mutt in Udupi has suggested the high command not to press for Yeddyurppa’s resignation unless the charges levied against him are proved. “Based on media reports the party should not take any action against the chief minister,” he said.
The swami, however, added that if the BJP high command indeed came to the conclusion that Yeddyurappa was guilty, there is nothing wrong in taking action against him. “I have regards for Yeddyurappa. I don’t like action being taken against him without proof,” he added.
