The CPI said yesterday that it was not in favour of dismissing the Shiv Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra.

Party general secretary A B Bardhan said that even though the coalition government has imposed a reign of terror in the state, especially targeting the minorities and Dalits, the use of Article 356 would be counter-productive.

He said the battle in the state should be fought politically with the united strength of all secular forces.

The party also opposed the ordinance to regularise out-of-turn allotments of residential accommodation to government servants, and asked the government to drop the proposed bill on the issue. In a statement, the party said such a bill to regularise out-of-turn allotments through illegal means would set a bad precedent. It is meaningless to claim that this is a humanitarian and compassionate move. Humanitarianism demands that those who are in queue for the last 10-15 years should get the allotment first, the statement said.
