Dikshit asks PWD for best technology to repair roads

Facing severe criticism over poor condition of roads, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit today said she has asked the PWD to use the "best possible technology" to repair and improve the roads in the national capital.    

Dikshit said "unprecedented rains" in the city have affected road repairing and the government has now set the deadline of improving all roads before Diwali.    

"I have asked the PWD to use the best possible technology to repair and strengthen the city roads. We will finish the repair work and proper lighting of the streets before Diwali," Dikshit told reporters after a Cabinet meeting.    

She said use of the best technology and materials was important as the condition of the roads which were laid using latest technology has not deteriorated post-rains.    

Dikshit said the PWD has also been directed to initiate all major and minor repairs on war-footing so that the same could be completed by September.    

Asked whether MCD is to be blamed for the poor condition of the roads, Dikshit refused to enter into any blame game, saying every agency should work hard to improve the condition of the roads.    

Under fire over poor condition of city roads, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on August 18 set a deadline period of 10 days to repair and fill up potholes.    

Traffic police have identified 62 stretches in the city including the government's ambitious bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor in South Delhi, 44 roads under jurisdiction of the municipal body, 12 under PWD, two under NDMC and two national highways as being in poor shape.     
With the Assembly elections round the corner, the poor condition of roads have become a big headache for the government.
