DoNER Ministry announces Rs 200 cr package for Assam

Another Rs 125 cr given to North East

The Union ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has today announced a Rs 200 crore package for Assam and another Rs 125 crore package for the entire Northeastern region. The amount would be spent mainly for water supply, roadways and organic farming projects.

"The Rs 200 crore for Assam would be spent for water supply and roadways. Another Rs 125 crore would be spent to develop organic farming in the region. These projects have been specifically formulated keeping in mind the needs of the state in Northeast," said Jitendra Singh, Union DoNER minister.

With regard to the Rs 125 crore package for organic farming, Singh said, to start with, cardamom and few varieties of fruits would be cultivated organically under this package in the region. He said the organic farming project has been designed in line with the Amul model.

"The project is shaped on ANAND cooperative pattern and detailed project report has already been sent to various ministries for their suggestions", the Union minister said.

He also said that the Union ministry was formulating a 'Make in North East' model in line with the 'Make in India' initiative so as to promote the 'Act East' policy of the Union government. "In order to bring the ministry closer to people, firstly, we have come up with a scheme called DoNER at Doorstep, wherein DoNER officials will visit the Northeastern states and secondly, a roster is being developed wherein around eight ministers will travel to Northeast every fortnight to have an assessment and feedback of state's plans and policies," said Singh.
