The Geographical Indication registry, which recognises natural or manmade products for their uniqueness to a region or a place, could touch 1,000 in a few years going by the trend so far, said PH Kurian, controller general of patents, designs, trademarks and geographical indications.

Across the country, there were 2,000 to 3,000 candidate products for the GI registration, he said, addressing a national conference on GIs from Andhra Pradesh, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and AP Technology Development and Promotion Centre. So far, 146 products have been listed in the GI registry and 210 more applications were under consideration.
