Govt panel on climate change

Manmohan Singh on Thursday said an executive committee would be constituted to assist the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change. An official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the committee would assist the PM’s council in evolving a coordinated response to issues relating to climate change at the national level.

Besides, the committee will regularly monitor the implementation of the eight national missions and other initiatives on climate change and co-ordinate with various agencies on issues relating to climate change.

The chairman of the executive committee will be the principal secretary to the prime minister and the secretary, ministry of environment and forests, will be the member-convenor. Representatives from the finance, power, renewable energy, coal, and agriculture ministries will also be part of the executive committee. The PM’s Council on Climate Change was constituted in 2007, to co ordinate with the National Action for Assessment, Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change.
