The government is working on a relief package for the textile sector, exports from which have been hit hard due to a decline in demand from markets like United States and European Union.

The panel of senior government officials headed by Finance Secretary Arun Ramanathan will finalise proposals to help the sector in a meeting scheduled on Thursday.

“The committee has received suggestions from the industry. The textile secretary will be invited for the next meeting and the proposals will be finalised,” said an official.

The panel was set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently to look in to problems of the industry arising out of the global financial crisis.
