Come 2007, Hyderabad will play host to yet another international conference. A global gathering of artificial intelligence (AI) experts, the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), will be held for the first time in India from January 6-12, 2007. The theme of the conference will be 'Artificial Intelligence and its Benefits to Society'.

IJCAI is organised once in every two years. In 2005, the conference was held in the UK and 946 registered delegates had participated. In 2007, 600 delegates are expected to take part in the conference. While workshops and tutorials will be organised from January 6-8 at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, the main conference will be held from January 9-12 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.

Addressing the media, Raj Reddy, the Mozah Bint Nasser University professor of computer science and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, said, "India is good at AI but has not yet gained critical mass. Research has not yet picked up in the country. However, the benefits of AI are huge."

Reddy is one of the trustees of IJCAI and also serves on the Microsoft Technical Advisory Board. "AI's applications range from speech recognition and data mining to even developing accident-free cars. It is learnt that around 2 lakh people die in automobile accidents every year in India. Use of robotics for intelligent cruise control can be a boon to India," he added.

According to Rajeev Sangal, IIT director, Hyderabad, India had to meet tough competition from Australia and Hong Kong for IJCAI-07 conference. "We hope that IJCAI gives boost to research activity in India," he added.
