The Central government today announced that a high-level inter-ministerial central team has been deputed to make on-the-spot assessment of flood damages in Tamil Nadu. The team will visit the flood hit areas tomorrow.

Ministry of Home Affairs said the team would be led by T V S N Prasad, joint secretary in the ministry.

The team will include representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, Finance, Rural Development, Drinking Water and Power from Delhi, representatives of Ministries of Road Transport and Highways and Health from Chennai and Central Water Commission, Ministry of Water Resources from Bengaluru.

Since November 7, severe rains hit four districts in Tamil Nadu -- Cuddalore, Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram -- during the last couple of weeks, killing around 180 people.

On November 23, Jayalalithaa sent a memorandum to Narendra Modi asking for a central funding of Rs 8,481 crore towards flood relief.

She also asked for an immediate relief of Rs.2,000 crore. Within hours, Prime Minister instructed release of financial assistance worth Rs 939.63 crore to the state.
