I-T case against Jaya adjourned to April 28

J Jayalalithaa on Thursday once again skipped personal appearance at the additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) court, (economic offence).

The magistrate posted the matter for the hearing on April 28 and said Jayalalithaa and her friend, Sasikala Natarajan must appear.

The income-tax department had instituted criminal proceedings by filing complaints in 1996 and 1997 against Jayalalithaa and her friend Sasikala Natarajan, for not filing returns in their individual capacity for the assessment year 1993-94.

Again in 1997, the department filed two complaints against Sasi Enterprises and its partners, both, Jayalalithaa and Sasikala, allegedly failing to file returns for the assessment years 1991-92, 1992-93.

On April 3, while the court ordered Jayalalithaa to appear before it on April 10. When the case came up for hearing on Thursday, petitions were filed by the defence stating that a petition has been filed before the high court against an order of the ACMM court, which had directed for personal appearance of Jayalalithaa.

Also, an application has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking extension of time for completing the trial in the case.
