The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is moving forward in its goal to reach 100 PhD admissions per year by 2012. This year, the institute admitted around 125 research students, taking the total number to 307 with 84 PhD students and 223 Ms students, said IIIT-H director Rajeev Sangal.

Speaking at the institute’s seventh convocation ceremony on Sunday, he said the Andhra Pradesh government had announced setting up a new large university called Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies in three campuses in the state, particularly to cater to talented rural students. “IIIT-H is helping to develop curricula, create digital content besides training its teachers,” he said.

Around 250 undergraduate and postgraduate students, including the institute’s first doctoral student Million Meshesha (doctor of philosophy in computer science and engineering), were conferred degrees today. IIIT-H currently has over 700 undergraduate students, 250 postgraduate students and 300 postgraduate research students.
