A professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was killed and three others were injured when unidentified gunmen fired indiscriminately inside the prestigious Indian Institute of Sciences (IIS) here today.

The police identified the dead as MC Puri and those injured as Pankaj Gupta, Sangeeta and Patel.

According to police, four-five persons came in a white Ambassador car inside the campus of the institute and opened fire from automatic weapons outside the JN Tata Auditorium, where an international conference was on, at around 5 pm.

The injured were admitted to the MS Ramaiah Hospital. Police have cordoned off the area and have launched a hunt for the assailants who fled the scene.

The institute is on the hit list of terrorist groups, including Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. Asked if it was a terrorist attack, Police Commissioner Ajay K Singh said, "We can not say anything at this stage".

He said it appeared that an automatic weapon was used in the shooting. "There is no information on how they came and who they were," he added.

Police were combing the institute complex to ensure that there were no explosives left by the gunmen. One car parked inside the complex was hit by a bullet.
