The Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to introduce modern cold chain system for transportation of horticulture produce to terminal markets of the country.

"The system envisages to improve quality and shelf-life of the fruit to fetch better price in the competitive market," Horticulture Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir said while talking to a deputation of fruit growers and traders here.

He said the Jammu and Kashmir government proposed to set up a modern compressed atmosphere store (CAS) costing Rs 1,200 crore for this purpose in the state.

Mir assured the fruit growers that government would take all possible measures to enforce uniform freight rate for transportation of fruits from the valley to other terminal markets of the country.

He said an extension counter of the Jammu and Kashmir bank would be opened in the vegetable and fruit market at Kulgam in Anantnag district shortly.

However, Mir asked fruit growers to export only A-grade fruits and segregate C-grade fruit under market intervention scheme.

He said all possibilities would be explored to install a weighbridge near lower Munda in Anantnag to check tax evasion and inconvenience caused to the fruit growers of the valley at Lakhanpur check post.
