The BJP yesterday charged Prime Minister I K Gujral with trying to cultivate the Clinton constituency even more assiduously than before, through the governments recently announced revenue raising schemes.
Ever since he has become Prime Minister, Gujral has bent over backward to please the Americans, BJP spokesperson Yashwant Sinha told the Business Standard. Now the Prime Minister will report to US President Bill Clinton about all the hard economic decisions taken by the Indian government like a school boy does to his teachers.
Sinha said the BJP had no doubt that the Union governments recent economic measures were aimed at pleasing the Clinton administration.
He recalled the controversy created by Gujral during the Gulf War in refuelling the US war planes.
The BJP spokesperson also demanded that the government bring a comprehensive sugar policy containing licensing and delicensing of the sugar industry, marketing and distribution and import. Patchwork solutions will not work and will instead harm the interest of the common man, he said.
