The Orissa government will borrow Rs 1,070 crore from World Bank for its state roads development programmes, the Parliament was informed today.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Shipping, Road transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said, "State government of Orissa has entered into an agreement with World Bank for a loan amount of $250 million (approximate Rs 1,070 crore) for improvement of 461 km of state roads."

About delays on completion of highways in the state under the Golden Quadrilateral project, Muniyappa said of a total of 444 km, 352.50 km has already been completed, but the remaining portion could not be finished due to termination of contracts because of poor performances by the contractors.

"Out of the three contracts, two contracts have been re-warded and in one contract, the matter of termination of the earlier contractor is sub-judice," he added.
