Over 1000 seats in B.Tech programmes in reserved categories have fallen vacant in the prestigious IITs this year.
Of the 1,265 seats reserved for Scheduled Caste students, 337 seats are laying vacant. Similarly, of the 659 reserved seats for Scheduled Tribe students, 458 seats remained vacant while 207 of 251 seats could not be filled up in the category of Physically Challenged, Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said in the Rajya Sabha today.
These seats are being alloted to students in the respective categories for preparatory courses and those enrolled for such courses will undergo one-year capsule course and then take admission to the first year programme in the IITs.
Similarly, there 1,546 seats available for OBC students in these institutes and 1,493 have already taken admission.
The remaining 53 seats have been converted to general category as per the decision of the Supreme Court, she said.
