The Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) today sealed the supply of sulphur to the sulphuric acid plant of Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL), thereby threatening the operations of the plant, said a spokesperson of PPL.
It may be recalled that OSPCB had served a notice to PPL on October 3 asking for closure of three units of PPL- phosphoric acid plant, sulphuric acid plant and diammonium phosphate plant by 8 pm on October 10 as the pollution watchdog felt that the three units of PPL were violating pollution norms under hazardous waste management rule, 1989.
OSPCB had also sealed the sulphur feeding process of PPL’s sulphuric acid plant on October 3. Thereafter, the PPL authorities had contested the OSPCB notice in the Orissa High Court and the High Court had given a stay order on the OSPCB notice on October 10 as a result of which all the three units of PPL were continuing their operations. The High Court hearing on the matter is scheduled for October 31.
