Salient features of the Road Transport & Safety Bill
• Compensation for hit-and-run cases from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh• Compensation up to Rs 10 lakh in road fatalities• Fine for driving without licence up 10 times• Penalty for drunken driving increases fivefold to Rs 10,000• Recommends a penalty of Rs 1,000, currently Rs 100, for persons without helmets, apart from suspension of licence for 3 months• For seatbelt violation, new proposed penalty is Rs 1,000. For driving without insurance, proposed fine is Rs 2,000
