The scholarships will cover the course fee but not hostel and boarding charges. Candidates who avail the scholarships will be required to sign a bond with the MAHE undertaking to work for the group companies for three years after the completion of their course.
MAHE will first select the top 100 students who have appeared for their entrance test and then eliminate those coming under the government and NRI quotas. This will leave 77 eligible for the scholarship.
MAHE has proposed to spend Rs 5 crore for the programme. From the next academic year, the programme will be extended to post graduate students, Dr Ramdas Pai, chancellor of MAHE and president of Manipal Group told reporters here on Wednesday.
Another initiative from MAHE includes study loans for economically backward students. MAHE will arrange bank study loans through the State Bank of India irrespective of the Indian state from where they hail so that bright students are not denied opportunities for higher education for want of adequate financial support, MAHE vice chancellor Dr H S Ballal said.
Dr Ranjan Pai, chief executive officer, Manipal Education and Medical Group said that the group plans to set up a large international campus in Bangalore within next two years with an investment of Rs 200-300 crore. "We are currently waiting for certain clarifications from the government on various issues like the fee structure, among others."
