SK Goel, a 1975 cadre officer of the Indian Revenue Service, today took over as the Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
Goel was earlier holding the charge of CBEC member (customs) and was responsible for formulation of policy concerning administration of laws, tariffs and procedurals matters relating to customs duties, an official statement stated here. He succeeds SD Majumdar.
"Goel's appointment as CBEC chairman is expected to support the ongoing tax reforms, trade facilitation initiatives and increased taxpayers services.
"It is also expected to support automation for enhancing operational efficiencies of the department and improve functioning of intelligence and enforcement agencies, and thus enhance overall tax compliance," the statement added.
Goel is recipient of the President's Award for distinguished services.
