Minister for Municipal Administration Qamrul Islam has informed that 45 public sector undertakings in Karnataka were profitable.

Replying to a question from MLC Dayanand during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council here on Tuesday, the minister said, the state had 60 PSUs, and of them 15 were loss-making. The commerce and industries’ department has reported that it would not be possible to revive the Mysore Lamps which has been suffering losses.

The matter on providing compensation to the workers had been pending in the court of law, the minister informed. MLC Dayanand had contended that the report submitted by the Department of Industries and Commerce had said that by investing Rs 40 crore it was possible to produce CFL bulbs at Mysore Lamps.

Qamrul Islam promised to bring this fact to the notice of energy minister D K Shivakumar.

Shivakumar stated that the government would set up transformer banks in each taluk of the state. Each bank will have 100 transformers which could be used as a replacement in the event of installed transformers going defunct. He was replying to question from MLC Govindraj.

The minister said, in the last five years 154,820 transformers at a cost of Rs 1,137 crore had been purchased.

“In case of any repairs, the staff of the respective Escoms have been instructed to set them right immediately. The transformers installed for the farmers should be repaired within three days while those for drinking water supply should be set right within 24 hours. Failing staff would be penalised,” Shivakumar added.

The government will soon buy 100,000 transformers at a cost of Rs 20 crore, he said.
