Representatives of constituent states of the western region electricity grid, which survived last week's collapse of the northern and eastern grids, are meeting tomorrow to take stock and reviewthe situation.

This grid, comprising Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa, has a daily requirement of 34,000 Mw, more than the supply. Load shedding of 3,000 Mw is needed.

A senior official of the Western Regional Load Despatch Centre (WRLDC) told Business Standard: "A special technical committee, of mainly generation, distribution and transmission utilities, will meet on Tuesday to critically study the circumstances which led to last week's collapse and the survival of the western region grid."

They would, he said, review the existing safety nets to ensure improvements in the wake of the grid collapses. The status of the islanding scheme in place for Mumbai city would also come up for discussion. As earlier reported by this newspaper, Mumbai's islanding scheme has been in place since 1981 and has survived 27 grid disturbances since. The official said several mock drills had already been conducted, with emphasis on early restoration of supply. The importance of adhering to grid discipline by constituent states would be stressed again at tomorrow’s meet.
