CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has written to the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly violating the poll code by sharing operational details of a "sensitive" defence mission in a television interview to influence voters.

 

In his letter to the EC, Yechury has alleged Modi's statements were in clear and deliberate violation of the guidelines which were re-issued and reiterated by the Election Commission before the first round of polling, making it clear that the armed forces, which belong to all of India, cannot be a subject for hyperbolic and false claims by any party.

Nearly 52% voting in Haryana till 4 pm

A voter turnout of 51.93 per cent was recorded till 4 pm in the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana on Sunday, with Kurukshetra and Hisar constituencies witnessing brisk polling.

 

Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm, officials said.

 

While poll officials said voting was going on smoothly, Congress' Rohtak candidate Deepender Singh Hooda, who is seeking re-election for a fourth term, accused Haryana Minister and Rohtak MLA Manish Grover of "intimidating" voters by forcibly entering some polling booths.

44.73 per cent voting recorded till 3 pm in Bihar

Around 44.73 per cent of 1.38 crore voters exercised their franchise till 3 pm in eight Lok Sabha seats of Bihar in the sixth phase of elections on Sunday, officials said.

 

A polling officer was killed at a booth in a freak incident of firing by a home guard before polling started in the Sheohar Lok Sabha seat.

LS polls in Haryana: EVMs to be stored in 90 strong rooms

Ninety strong rooms have been set up at 30 locations in Haryana to store the EVMs and VVPAT machines safely after completion of voting in the ten Lok Sabha constituencies, State's Joint Chief Electoral Officer Inder Jeet said Sunday.

 

He said Central Armed Police Force personnel (CAPF) would be deputed outside, while CCTV cameras would keep an eye inside the strong rooms.

 

He said the strong rooms have been set up as per the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Over 34 per cent polling reported till 1 pm in UP

Over 34 per cent polling was reported till 1 pm Sunday in 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state, where SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Union minister Maneka Gandhi are among the key contestants.

 

A state election office spokesperson said the average poll percentage was 34.92 per cent.

 

While Sultanpur parliamentary constituency recorded the highest turnout of 38.87 per cent, enthusiasm among voters was the least in Phulpur, where 29.20 per cent cast their ballots.

EVM glitches reported in several areas in Delhi

Complaints about malfunctioning EVMs poured in from several places of the national capital on Sunday where voting is underway.

 

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh said 5.5 per cent EVMs were replaced in the morning, adding that problems in EVMs were reported from Chandni Chowk and West Delhi.

 

"Mock polls happened in the morning and where machines were found defective they were replaced. 5.5 per cent EVMs were replaced during morning hours and that might have caused delay in start of polling," Singh said.

Average 30 per cent polling till afternoon across states

An average of over 30 per cent turnout was recorded till Sunday afternoon in 59 seats spread over UP, Haryana, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polls amid reports of attack on a BJP candidate in West Bengal and EVM snags.

 

Elections are being held in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 10 seats in Haryana, eights constituencies each in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, seven seats in Delhi and four in Jharkhand. The national capital recorded a turnout of over 34 per cent till 1 pm, poll officials said.
