More than 200 Afghan officials killed in insurgent attacks

Ensuing attacks have killed 45 civilians, apart from injuring 100 other security members at the Helmand province

Afghan officials say hundreds of members of the security forces have been killed recently, while fighting insurgent attacks on the main city in the southern province of Helmand.

According to Abdul Majeed Akhonzada, deputy head of the provincial council, and lawmaker Sheer Muhammad Akhon, at least 200 security officials have been killed in the past 10 days in the surrounding areas of Lashkar Gah.

The duo said further that the ensuing attacks have killed 45 civilians, apart from injuring 100 other security members.

Both say that it is the worst situation that the province has faced in 15 years after the Taliban's regime ended with the arrival of the United States in 2001.

Taliban has assumed control in most parts of Helmand, a place which the world's largest source for heroin.
