Civilians in the war-ravaged Syria are forced to survive on grass, a World Food Programme aid director has said.

Matthew Hollingworth, Syria director for the World Food Programme, has described to CNN the desperate situation of civilians in war-ravaged Syrian town of Homs.

Hollingworth said Syrians are feeding themselves, their children and families with anything, including weed, grass, and whatever they can pick on the side of the curb.

According to CNN, he said people were living in tunnels, in basements of apartment buildings, which are otherwise destroyed or in basements of shopping centers.

The United Nations is taking advantage of a rare, and very shaky ceasefire to deliver aid to civilians in Homs.

There were rumors that aid had been suspended, but Hollingworth said that it had merely been stopped so that aid workers could regroup and plan for the following day, the report added.
