IIM-L launches new course on sustainable management

At a time when environmental degradation, global warming and climate change are being viewed in terms of their economic implications by corporates, the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) is looking to add academic emphasis by launching a post-graduate programme on the subject.

IIM-L has launched a post-graduate programme in sustainable management (PGP-SM). The two-year full-time residential programme would initially have 45 seats and would be conducted at

IIM-L's Noida campus in Delhi NCR region.

"Most management institutes in India are criticised for not making much contribution in the field of business sustainability and associated public policy processes. IIM Lucknow, in 2011-2012, became the first IIM to establish a dedicated centre of excellence for business sustainability. Another step has been taken in this direction with the launch of a PGP-SM," said IIM-L in a statement.

Due to increased awareness in society about environmental degradation, global warming, climate change and socio-economic implications of ever increasing corporate power, nation states are forcing businesses to mould their business strategies to align with sustainable development objectives of the country as well as of the globe.

With admission to be based on CAT scores, PGP-SM would focus on environmental, social and economic sustainability aspects, change management preparation, critical perspectives on policy and institutions, cross sector collaborations, and systemic linkages among environmental, social and economic issues.

"Today's managers need to understand and appreciate the expectations of all stakeholders and behave in a socially responsible manner. Concepts like corporate social responsibility, corporate citizenship, corporate social opportunity ad stakeholder management are gaining prominence in the parlance of management practices," IIM-L stated.
