Liberal education college hunts for IIM faculty

With the launch of the Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME), India's first liberal education college at Pune, six faculty with an IIM-A background, some of them former deans of the institute, are all set to join the new college.
 
The college, which is set to commence classes from July 2007, is also in talks with various faculty members from other IIMs in the country to rope them in as full-time faculty.
 
FLAME, established by Ahmedabad-based entrepreneur Parag Shah and Nemish Shah, is a Rs 50- crore venture of liberal management education in the country.
 
The college offers four-year undergraduate programmes leading to dual qualifications of BABA and a diploma in Liberal Education.
 
It also offers a two-year MBA in Liberal education as well as a two-year MBA in Mass Media.
 
FLAME has applied to Pune University and Maharashtra Vidyapith for accreditation and is also planning to get itself registered as a deemed university.
 
"We have consciously decided to invite faculty members from the IIMs owing to their experience in world-class teaching environments and we plan to offer the best packages to them," said Veena Yadav, who will be the dean of student activities and head of HR, FLAME.
 
Indira Parikh, ex-dean at IIM-A, has been appointed president of FLAME while Prakash Shingi, former dean from the same premier institute, will be supporting Parikh as dean.
 
Achyut Vaze, former officiating director at IIM-A, will be the dean, School of Communication, and Veena Yadav, former principal of the Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, is the other faculty member of the new college.
 
Three current faculty members from IIM-A would be joining the college soon, said Yadav.
 
The college would be offering students a chance to major in dance, theatre and comparative religion, which is the first in the country.
 
The student intake for the under-graduate course is 180, while that for the School of Business is 120 and 60 for MBA in Mass Media.
 
The fee has been pegged at Rs 3.62 lakh per annum for the undergraduate course while that for the post-graduate courses is Rs 5.5 lakh.
 
The college is in talks with various European colleges for student and faculty exchange programmes.
