Around 18,300 quintal of big seeds and 9,600 quintal of small seeds have been traded in Rajkot, that is total trading volume of 27,900 quintal in 5 days (7 November to 11 November).
Two categories of groundnut 'big seed' and 'small seed' are traded in the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs).
"After Labh Pancham muhurat saudas, arrival of groundnuts increased marginally in Rajkot and prices have also been stable in parity of Rs 327 a quintal," said H V Vadodariya, secretary, Rajkot APMC.
Main centres where groundnut grows in abundance are located in Rajkot, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar and Porbandar districts.
"Highest yield recorded till date was on 8 November wherein we received 4,500 quintal of big seeds of groundnut and 2,500 quintal of small seed of groundnut in the yard and the rates for big seeds were Rs 309 on lower side and Rs 352 on higher side as against which Rs 308 on lower side for smaller seed and Rs 355 on higher side," said Vadodariya.
Oil millers are also working to avail the best quality of edible groundnut oil, further gearing-up their production process.
"Arrival of groundnut and cotton yields across the APMCs is good and prices are stable, but unfortunately edible oil millers have not encashed the opportunity as per day production of edible oil is just 600 MT," said Suresh Kaneriya, oil miller.
There are 200 oil mills for groundnut oil processing and 300 for cottonseed oil in Saurashtra. Majority of them have started operations after Labh Pancham but production has not yet geared up during this season, he added.
The confusion about fortification of vitamins in edible oil as per guidelines is probably the reason behind the slow production.
"A meeting of oil millers from Saurashtra was scheduled in Rajkot by the Saurashtra Oil Millers Association (Soma) along with the district civil supplies department. A complete guidance to oil millers on fortification of vitamins in edible oil shall be imparted in the presence of chief minister Narendra Modi and process of adding vitamins in edible oil shall also be demonstrated to them in the same function," said Ukabhai Patel, Soma President.
After this meet there should not be any delay as the groundnut crop is surplus this year, he added. Sales tax department is also alert and has established check-posts at various locations , monitoring the movement of edible oil cargo.
"Every year we keep a check on edible oil cargo movements taking place across Saurashtra by constructing check-posts at key transit points on the state highways, this year as the season is late by month or so, we have established five check-posts across key transit points located in four districts," said an official source from sales tax department.
Rajkot sales tax division has established one check-post near Sakhat-Sanala on Gandhidham-Morvi-Rajkot Highway, followed by one check-post near Wankaner-Boundary on Rajkot-Ahmedabad Highways, One check-post at Bedeshwar and Jam-Khambhaliya each monitoring traffic on Okha-Rajkok highway and one check-post at Bhojpara near Gondal monitoring traffic on Veraval: Porbandar-Rajkot Highway, he added. However, no illegal seizures have yet been registered on these check-posts, he said.
