Guar seed production is projected to fall in the current crop year 2005-06 to 400,000-500,000 tonne, mainly because of the decline in overall acreage under guar crop, especially in Rajasthan, according to the crop-monitoring arm of Foretell Business Solutions.

To this estimated production, Rajasthan is expected to contribute to the tune of 3,00,000 tonne, followed by Gujarat 80,000 tonne and Haryana 75,000 tonne.

Despite the reduced accreage, India could have managed to produce the expected quantity of 7,00,000 tonne guar seed.

But less than realisation of yield in the field, i.e. 2-3 quintals per hectare instead of normal yield levels of 5-7 quintals per hectare, further reduced the projection to finally peg production at 5,00,000 tonne.

Indian guar seed is in high demand in the domestic as well as the international market, and the total demand stands at about 600,000 tonne. Internationally, India supplies nearly 4,00,000 tonne of guar seed in gum or split form, and domestic consumption is nearly 2,00,000 tonne.

Therefore, the estimated production of guar seed could be insufficient. So, we are likely to see hikes in prices in the coming months.

However, as per estimates, nearly 1.5-2 lakh tonne of guar seed from the past year's produce is still in stock, which makes the availability of the seed just enough to cater to the requirement.

Thus, the prices of guar are expected to be in the range of Rs 14 to Rs 17 per kg this month and in December. However, supply push following harvest of the crop may result in a fall in prices in the subsequent months, in the range of Rs 13 and Rs 16 per kg.
