A sudden sharp fall in the markets took its toll on the Smart Portfolios in the week under review. The Smart Portfolios benchmark index portfolio value declined 2.3 per cent to Rs 9.44 lakh in the last five trading days. Meanwhile, the benchmark index is now down 5.7 per cent at Rs 9.44 lakh.

Shishir Bajpai and Vinay Khattar were the two active fund managers, and interestingly, both of them were net buyers. While Bajpai net bought shares worth Rs 1.55 lakh, Khattar was net buyer of stocks to the tune of Rs 33,000.

AJAY PARMAR, HEAD RESEARCH INSTITUTIONAL EQUITIES, EMKAY
Ajay Parmar continued to remain on the sidelines, and his portfolio this week saw a sharp cut of 4.6 per cent as against the 2.3 per cent fall in the benchmark portfolio. Of the 19 stocks in his portfolio, 14 are trading below his cost price. Parmar’s net worth has dropped below the Rs 10-lakh corpus, to Rs 9.59 lakh, down over four per cent. With just Rs 1.11 lakh in cash, and two months to go for the Smart Portfolios season to come to an end on September 3, 2011, it would be interesting to see how Parmar looks to turnaround his portfolio.

SHISHIR BAJPAI, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, IIFL PRIVATE WEALTH
Shishir Bajpai executed 20 trades, 12 on the buy side. His fresh buys include stocks like GTL (bought at Rs 100.5), Prime Focus, Punj Lloyd, Reliance Infrastructure, Timken India and Orchid Chemicals (bought at Rs 225). Among his fresh picks, GTL and Orchid Chemicals which face high volatility in the markets, are giving him returns of 7.5 per cent and 12.5 per cent, respectively. However, in the sell side trades, Bajpai accrued a loss of 5-11 per cent each on his investment in Thermax, ADF Foods, Tata Motors, Subex and Jai Balaji. His net worth now stands at Rs 12.61 lakh, up over 26 per cent.

VINAY KHATTAR, RESEARCH HEAD - EDELWEISS WEALTH MGMT
Vinay Khattar in his three buy side trades, bought Delta Corp, Lovable Lingerie and Shree Renuka Sugars for Rs 2.83 lakh, his least weightage is in Shree Renuka Sugars. On one hand, he sold his existing holding in Delta Corp for a gain of over 10 per cent, while on the other, he incurred a loss of two-five per cent each on his exit from V-Guard and Wockhardt. Khattar remains cash rich, with Rs 9.32 lakh balance, and his portfolio is valued at Rs 12.07 lakh, up 20.7 per cent.
