Sensex recovers partially, ends down 81pts

The Sensex today opened up 71 points at 10,969. The index rallied 138 points to the day's high of 11,036.

The index slipped into the red in early noon trades. It tumbled to a low of 10,715 - down 321 points from the day's high.

The Sensex recovered partially towards the close and finally ended down 81 points at 10,818.

The market breadth was fairly negative. Out of 2,598 stocks traded, 1,430 declined and 1,076 advanced. The rest remained unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

ACC rallied over 5% to Rs 646.

Wipro gained 2.7% at Rs 282, and Infosys  added 1% to Rs 1,379.

...AND THE SHAKERS

DLF slumped over 4% to Rs 227. Sterlite and Maruti Suzuki declined nerly 4% each to Rs 368 and Rs 760, respectively.

Tata Power, Sun Pharma, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra, ONGC, Ranbaxy and Reliance Communications dropped 2-3% each.

OTHER PROMINENT GAINERS...

Bajaj Holdings and Investments soared 20% to Rs 417. LIC Housing Finance gained 8% at Rs 300.

Ispat Industries, Suzlon, Punj Lloyd,  Marico, Reliance Power and Zee Entertainment moved up 5-7% each.

...AND THE LOSERS

Rolta India crashed 14% to Rs 88. HCL Technologies, Unitech, Praj Industries, IRB Infrastructure, Videocon, Indiabulls Realestate, ABB, Andhra Bank, Federal Bank, GMDC and Hindustan Copper slipped 5-10% each.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 254.15 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 215.06 crore), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 156 crore), Unitech (148.78 crore) and HDIL (144.06 crore)

Unitech led the volume charts with trades of nearly three crore shares followed by IFCI (2.58 crore), Suzlon (2.34 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.79 crore)  and Ispat Industries (1.09 crore).
