With the addition of these two firms the number of companies with market capitalisation (m-cap) of over Rs 1-lakh crore has increased to 24 currently.
Asian Paints with m-cap of Rs 1.02 lakh crore stands at number 23 in the overall ranking on the BSE, while UltraTech Cement with Rs 1 lakh crore stands at 24.
On February 29, when the S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 index touched a 52-week low, there were 17 companies in the league.
Since January 29, 2015, the day indices hit a record highs, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has also joined the elite league.
In contrast, at the peak of the previous bull market in 2008, there were 13 companies in this list. Of these, the m-cap of six companies – DLF, MMTC, NMDC, Reliance Communications, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and Steel Authority of India (SAIL) – are below Rs 1 lakh crore currently.
Since January, these three stocks – IOC (up 54 per cent), Asian Paints (21 per cent) and UltraTech Cement (16 per cent) – have outperformed the market and rallied around 15 per cent each as compared to a five per cent decline in the Sensex. The Sensex closed at 28,095 on Monday and is 1,587 points away from its all-time closing high of 29,682.
In past week, after the results for the quarter ended June were announced the stock of UltraTech Cement has outperformed the market by gaining 4.4 per cent against a one per cent rise in the benchmark index.
