At least forty-eight people have been killed in a plane crash in the west of the Iranian capital Tehran.

According to the BBC, an Iran-140 jet carrying 48 people, including 40 passengers and eight crew, which was heading to the eastern city of Tabas, went down in a residential area near Mehrabad airport on Sunday morning, Iranian state media said.

Iran's aviation authority said five children are reported to be among the passengers killed in the air crash that occurred at 9:18 local time (4:48 GMT), shortly after takeoff.

The country has witnessed more than 200 plane accidents in the past 25 years, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths.

Iran has suffered a series of plane crashes, blamed on its ageing aircraft and poor maintenance record, the report said.
