A report has revealed that around 370 journalists around the world have been murdered in the last 10 years with no major steps being taken by governments to protect them.
The report by US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) revealed that 90 percent of journalists were murdered "with impunity".
According to the Dawn, the CPJ report says that targeted attacks on the media have kept the world from understanding the full dimension of violence in Syria, drug trafficking in Mexico, militant influence in Pakistan and corruption in Russia.
Elisabeth Witchel, lead author of the report, says that the "unchecked and "unresolved" murders of journalists intending to inform their societies and the world is one of the "greatest threats" to press freedom today.
The report said that if the murderers were left unpunished, they would be further emboldened to repeat violence against journalists.
As per the CPJ research, around 88 per cent of journalist slayers around the world faced no consequences, despite the apprehension of their accomplices.
The report said that local journalists reporting on corruption, crime, human rights, politics, or war, were among the majority of those killed in the last 10 years.
